Do you have a pet? What kind of pet do you own, and why did you choose it?
Submitted by Brendz.
Boy do I. Best dog in the world (except when she's not):
I didn't choose her. She chose me (when her first choice fell through). I, of course, went along with the whole thing. I haven't regretted it yet.
By the way, for those of you who know her, you may find this interesting: Stella has a daily dog walker.
Every afternoon, her dog walker, Pamela comes over and whisks her away to some crazy adventure with a ton of dogs. Sometimes they go to squirrel hunting in Buena Vista, sometimes swimming at Fort Funston or McClaren. Sometimes running in the meadows in Golden Gate park. She always comes back exhausted and with a massive smile on her little dog face.
It's expensive, but so worth it....
After not travelling much this past year, January is going to be a big departure from the norm. Frankly, I don't know how I'm going to do it...:
- Jan 8-12 - Indianapolis (Tenative)
- Jan 12-17 - Seattle
- Jan 19-21 - Lake Tahoe
- Jan 26-28 - Manhattan
- What in the hell is there to do in Indianapolis -- in January?
- Do you have any advice on where to stay in NYC without breaking the bank?
- Anyone want to spend some time with a fantastic dog?
From Jenn, Stella and myself. May you be blessed with health, happiness, good food, friends and family!
It required a number of takes.
Despite her expression, Stella was not displeased.
Stella just threw up and immediately ate it. Ew...
Yesterday was my first day of my revived consulting career. It started well enough.
- Woke up early to a pot of coffee and a nice breakfast.
- Walked Stella for an hour and a half.
- Finished my one remaining task for Six Apart
- Jumped into transferring my data off of my work computer that 6A was nice enough to let me keep for a few days for this purpose.
- Had a meeting with a prospective client and ate yummy Baja fish tacos.
- Walked Stella for another hour.
- Continued transferring data off to the new computer
- Did a major software update to bring the new computer up to speed.
And that's where my day went to hell.... After the Software Update, the computer wouldn't boot. Instead it stopped on the Apple screen with the little throbber going mezmerizingly and maddenly around in it's little circle. It wouldn't let me boot into Safe mode. I followed the Apple guidelines in their knowledge base for such an issue but none resolved the problem. Verbose startup told me that two different messages were being thrown into the system.log"
/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
So I booted into single-user mode and spent the next four hours trying different things all to no avail. Now, I consider myself a pretty advanced Mac OS X issue and I couldn't get the damn thing to work. What would Joe Blow do?
Well, Joe Blow is probably using Windows, so I took a page out of their playbook and reinstalled the OS. After that, I performed the Software Update again and, voilá, all was well.
All in all, I spent the entire afternoon and most of the night fixing my new computer. That, my friends, is wrong. However, today all is well and the first thing I did was to create a full backup disk image. Not doing that again. Oh no...
Today, I'll be installing the Developer Tool s which will not only also need an update but which have also given me kernel panics in the past. Treading cautiously...
On the bright side, with the computer down or inaccessible for so long while updating/resintalling, I was able to clean the house and cook a good meal for Jenn. Yay for working at home!
I woke up today, admittedly groggy thanks to Vox, and the first thing that came to my mind after "I have the greatest girlfriend in the world" (she brought me coffee -- I'm easy...) was "Wow, this is my last day at Six Apart".
What a crazy thought. This place and these people I devoted myself to over the past two years from the little office and big commute to San Mateo to the little commute and big office in San Francisco were, tomorrow, going to become slightly more distant (at least in physical proximity and daily focus).
Here are some of the things I'm going to miss the most:
- Building the infrastructure for and working with such a tight, razor sharp and passionate team (especially my long-time partner-in-MT, Brad Choate)
- Watching Stella play with Mocha
- Walking with Stella to work and back every day
- Making the future of Movable Type and Movable Type Enterprise
- Working for the number on thought and technology leader in the blogging industry
- Debbie's little "treats" and ever-sunny disposition
- The snark-ful and collaborative whirlwhind that is #mt
- Helping Ginevra and Marissa in a thousand different ways to sell this product
- The Stella-spoliers: Ruby, Lyli and Stephanie over at StarBucks, Luke at Zuppa and Amanda at Hotel Utah
- "Lunch" at the Hotel Utah
- Experiencing Jamison's warm and smiling presence every morning
- Arguing with Anil and counting the number of times he says "Well, there are three things.." or "Coming back from that..."
- Our video conferences with Fumiaki and his team in Japan
- Seeing, every day, the wonderful friends I've made within these walls
I could go on and on. So much of my life for the last two years has been wrapped up with this company and the people in it. There is definite sadness in leaving it behind.
At the same time, I have such great excitement with the path and challenges that lay ahead. I look forward to shifting back to consulting with a 20-foot commute and being able to set my own course and truly manage my own future. I look forward to being able to focus outward again, being social, meeting people, and taking on new and interesting projects every month. I look forward to having the lurxury of diving into my own pet projects again, some of which have lain dormant for more than two years.
I look forward to having the freedom to take Stella for a two-hour bike ride through Golden Gate park. I look forward to the ability to jump on a plane and visit friends and family for more than just forty-eight hours. I relish the ability to do the simple things in life that are so hard with a 9-5 (ha!) job: Dropping off and picking up the dry cleaning, making sure that there's food in the house, being able to run an errand in the middle of the day without feeling like I'm stealing time, etc, etc.
And perhaps most of all, I look forward to having the mental and psychological freedom to invest the time and effort into the most important relationship in my life -- with my superstar, Jen.
So to all of you at Six Apart: I'll miss my daily interactions with you all, but I won't be far. Plus you always know where to reach me. Never hesitate to do so.
To my team: I've loved (nearly :-) every minute of my time with you. We did great things together and I look forward to doing more in the future. I also know that you are rockstars who will carry on the tradition. I'm always here if you need anything.
To Jen: You're the best. Thank you so much for being my rock.
To Stella: Bark bark growl whine growl bark bark.
To the world: Here I come...
I actually have three goals for this weekend. First, say goodbye to the closet formerly known as the Burning Man closet and hello to the closet soon to be known as "the closet".
Also, this thing. She needs a bath. Badly...
And finally, I must, absolutely must, locate my birth certificate for without it, I cannot fly JetBlue for free and that's just a crime. I didn't have a visual for my birth certificate, so this will have to do:
They are good. Go see them and the dogs that inspired them.
The latest release of Vox added a number of new styles which were done by our intern Tiffany Chow. Not only are they beautiful but they're also personal to me (and many of us). You can find them under the "New" tab of the Design screen:
Originally, the deisgn I was going for was the awesome San Francisco cityscape:
But then I saw THIS one and my jaw dropped to the floor:
That's My Puppy!!! I had no idea. Gineevers!! Stella's famous! See here for more about the dogblogs.
How to get Stella's groove on your blog
For those who aren't familiar, I'll give you a quick run-down because I just know that you want this beautiful pup on your blog.
1. Log into Vox and click on the Design link in the upper right corner. If your somewhere else in Vox, you can always get to here by clicking on the Vox logo and then the Design link.
2. Select a layout for your blog:
3. Click the "New" tab on the left of the designs screen
3. Hover over Scribble Dog Stella (or one of gorgeous, but non-Stella designs), look at it in a larger form if you like and apply it! Voila!
Designs like ain't no one never saw on MySpace, Friendster, Yahoo 360, MSN Spaces and the ilk...
To Tiffany and the Vox team, YOU ROCK!
Okay, Miss Stella is:
- Stinky
- Dirty
- Flea-ridden
Yes, it's that time of year. Probably also because of a healthy amount of this.
Sooo, I'm wondering who might know of a great dog groomers in San Francisco where we could pull the doggie hat trick. Does anyone have a good recommendation?
