Most succint primer on the Middle East and its people

Over the last 10 years, I've read a great deal about the Middle East most memorably "The Crusades through Arab Eyes" and although the history behind modern events goes back thousands of years, some of the concepts are very simple.

Today Jason pointed to this excellent overview which gives you a basic feel for who the people of the Middle East are and who they aren't: What Every American Should Know About the Middle East

Are they teaching Middle Eastern history yet in schools? Everyone should know at least the above if we intend to make smarter decisions in the future as a nation.

If you want a more in-depth but fair and comprehensive coverage of the Israel-Palestine history, check out Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict, 1881-2001. I learned lots of things I never heard from traditional US media and education, including how the surrounding Arab nations several times allowed their own selfishness to block their support of Palestine at key moments, and how the early Zionists were actually the first ones to use terrorist bombing tactics in public spaces. And did you know Israel attacked the USS Liberty, a US Navy ship, in 1967 killing 34 sailors and wounding over 150? I'm still amazed that's not part of our national memory.
