Hiding applications from Mac OS X's task switcher

Comments

[this is adequate] I've used Dockless to eliminate the following from the task switcher and dock: Default Folder X, Quicksilver, MenuCalendar Clock, Last.fm, Skitch and Colloquy.

All of these applications are ones where I rarely use the menu bar and which I can access easily via QuickSilver. It's not ideal because, for example, I might need to interact with their menus in the future but I can always change their Dockless setting and relaunch the app if I need to.
Witch seems not to show windowless applications by default, but it looks completely different from the regular Mac switcher.
Hmm, LiteSwitch X (you can get it here) has an option to remove apps from the switcher, and works almost like the native switcher. Since the company/website is gone, though, I doubt you can register it anymore, and I don't know if it'll quit working or what.
merlin mann uses something called Spirited Away (bad app name for SEO). i heard him talk about it on a video he did last week. i haven't used it. ymmv.
Just a quick warning: DO NOT use dockless with apps that actually have windows. I've had a ridiculous number of "progressive crashes" where coreservicesd starts spinning out of control and each app you try to switch to stops responding within moments. Also, command-tab stops working.

Eventually, your whole system becomes less than responsive and you have to hard power cycle the computer.

Reverting all of the apps I hid with dockless seemed to remedy the situation. I believe that some hidden app had thrown up a dialog box that was also hidden and shit went downhill from there.

Duly noted.
That background apps don't have menu bars seems to be part of OS X's definition of “background app.” Launchbar 5's long dialog box when you pick hide-from-dock blames OS X, at least. (Skitch has its own hide-from-dock option btw, so you could use that instead of setting it up through Dockless.)
There's no need to buy or install an app to remove another app from the tab-switcher - if you're happy to edit that application's Info.plist anyway...
